Fencing on a Sloped Section in New Zealand
Sloped sections are common throughout hilly NZ cities like Wellington, Dunedin, and parts of Auckland. There are two main approaches to fencing on a slope.
Raked fencing (parallel to slope)
The fence follows the slope continuously. Works well with aluminium slats, timber, or infill panels. Posts are set at equal intervals and the panel is cut or manufactured to follow the slope angle. Gives a clean, flowing look.
Stepped fencing (level panels with steps)
Each panel is level, stepping down the slope like a staircase. More common with pool fencing (which must be level for compliance), tubular steel, and precast concrete. Creates visible gaps at the base of each step on steep slopes — consider a gravel board or base rail to close these.
Steep slopes
On slopes over 15 degrees, consult a fencing specialist. Post depths may need to increase and concrete footing volumes will be higher than flat-ground estimates.
